Herman Joseph Kulla, 101, formerly of Kensal, ND peacefully passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025 surrounded by his loving children at North Dakota Veteran’s Home in Lisbon, ND.

Herman was born on February 11, 1924 to loving parents, Dorothy and Stanley Kulla. Herman’s family lived in Eldridge, ND and Windsor, ND before moving to Kensal, ND in 1936. Herman graduated from Kensal High School in 1942. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in World War II from 1943 to 1946, fighting in major battles including Guam and Iwo Jima. After returning from his service, Herman graduated from the State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND. He worked in Minneapolis for seven years before returning to Kensal where he became owner of Kulla Bar.

Herman married Jean Scott in August 1958 and celebrated 66 wonderful years together. They lovingly raised four children who will always cherish the memories of his quiet strength, unwavering support and the values he instilled in them. Herman loved spending time laughing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, sharing his humor and wit through jokes and tricks. Herman and Jean ran Kulla Bar for 46 years, making many lifelong friends and wonderful memories. Herman was also an active and proud member of the American Legion, recently receiving his 80-year membership pin. He was a faithful servant of St. John’s Catholic Church in Kensal, ND.

Herman loved baseball, being very active in baseball in his younger years and watching amateur and professional baseball in his later years. He made great friends on the field and in the stands. He and four of his brothers, the ‘Kulla boys,’, played on the famous Kensal Baseball Team from 1946 to 1951. Herman also loved hunting and fishing. In his free time, you would find him in his boat out on the lake or fishing on the shore with his family, always trying to catch that whopper.

North Dakota Veteran’s Home became Herman’s second home in April, 2025. He was loved by many as they enjoyed his stories and antics.

Herman will be greatly missed by his children, Kristie (Blair) Kuhn, Oakes, ND, Scott (Heather) Kulla, Fargo, ND, Kim Kulla, Ironton, MN, Karen (Pat Becker) Kulla, Andover, MN and sister Sharon (Harry) Sherlock, Albuquerque, NM.
