Joseph Schmaltz

Joseph “Joe” Schmaltz, age 74, of New Rockford, ND, died Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.

Joseph Adam Schmaltz was born on March 28, 1951, in Linton, ND, to Sebastian and Virginia (Heilman) Schmaltz. Joe attended school in Wishek and graduated from Wishek High School in 1969. Upon his graduation he enlisted in the United States Army. After an honorable discharge from active duty, Joe went to Officer Candidate School to become an officer in the North Dakota Army National Guard.  He retired with the rank of Captain after 29 years of military service. Joe was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He attended college in Wahpeton, obtaining his Associates Degree in Electronics and also attended Cardinal Muench Seminary.

Joe enjoyed life to the fullest and had a passion for the outdoors. He had been on many hunting trips to Africa, Canada and throughout the United States. He went on many trips with his family to include elk, wolf, bear, caribou, and deer hunts, along with many fishing trips.  Joe was especially proud of his five grandchildren, watching them as they grow and all of their activities. Joe was active at St. John’s Catholic Church through the years. He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council #2477. Joe has always been known to be ready to lend a helping hand to all those who were in need.

Joe loved the ranch life with his horses and sheep. He was part of the 7th Calvary C-Company headquartered in Barlow, North Dakota. He along with the other members, would participate in many 4th of July parades with their horses and covered wagons. Joe was one of the founders of the Vietnam Memorial in New Rockford. He was essential in getting the tank and helicopter to New Rockford for display. Joe was a Commander for the VFW in Carrington and a member of the Raymond B. Thorn American Legion, Post #30 in New Rockford.

From the early 1980’s to early 2000’s he owned and operated Joe’s TV Repair in Carrington and then moved his shop to New Rockford. During this time, he also started working at the Post Office in New Rockford. Joe was a rural Mail Carrier from 1982-2009, when he retired.

Joe is survived by his two children, Jeremy (Jackie) Schmaltz, New Rockford, ND and Tami (Joshua) Ochsner, Aberdeen, SD; five grandchildren, CJ, Madi, Abby, Connor and Sierra; siblings, George Schmaltz, Mary (Lyle) Dollinger, Roger (Araceli) Schmaltz, Rose (Kenneth) Schlader, Lucina Savey, Linda (Gary) Visto, and David (Michelle) Schmaltz; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dennis and Leroy and a nephew, Nick Schlader.

 

Joseph’s Visitation will be on Wednesday from 1:00PM – 3:00PM at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford, and will continue from 4:00-5:00PM at St. John’s Catholic Church with a Rosary Service at 4:40PM followed by a Vigil Service at 5:00PM at St. John’s Catholic Church, New Rockford, ND.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 10:00AM at St. John’s Catholic Church, New Rockford, ND.

His Burial will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, New Rockford, ND.

  10. Joe used to be my neighbor back on the farm, He has always been in my heart, even though I have not seen him in a long time. I remember him as being the most kind and trustworthy friend, 🙏to all the family❤️

  15. Joe was my classmate at Cardinal Muench Seminary way back in the mid 60’s. He was a quiet fella at the seminary but enjoyed farm talk and doing things outdoors. We were along with some others the “Germans” at the seminary.
    I saw him a few times since then and always liked to ‘catch up’ with what’s going on with each other.
