Mary Black Bull

Maryann (Wambli Ho Was’te Win) Black Bull was born on January 10, 1947 in Ft. Totten to Evelyn Mazakahomni & Felix White Shield. Maryann attended School and graduated from Warwick High School in Warwick, ND. Throughout Maryann’s life she was a Proud Dakota Wiyan from the Spirit Lake Dakota Nation.  Maryann obtained her degrees in A.A. Lakota Studies History Culture, B.A. of Science Lakota Studies Cultural Resource Management thru Sinte Gleska University, Rosebud, SD. While going to school there, Maryann was given the honor of Mrs. Sinte Gleska Wiyan. Throughout Maryann’s life, she worked as a Law Enforcement Dispatcher, a Secretary for Public Health Service, Elementary Lakota Language Teacher, Dakota/Lakota Language Instructor, Tribal & State Historical Preservation Officer, Actress (Dances with Wolves).  Maryann was active on the TCC Board and Four Winds Tribal Education Board. 

Maryann went to Cooks Bible College, Mesa, AZ.  During that time, Maryann had met Rolland Black Bull of Rosebud, SD.  After a few years of courtship, Maryann made her move to Rapid City, SD to join her soulmate.  Rolland & Maryann spent 25 plus years together before Rolland made his journey to the Spirit World.  Maryann enjoyed visiting with her many relatives, dancing to “Country Charm” and listening to various artists from Selena to George Strait.  She also enjoyed doing beadwork and quilting her daughter Erin’s quilts.  She loved to joke around with everyone she came across, always greeting with a handshake and good words.  Maryann had an amazing heart and a prayer for anyone in need.  Maryann played many roles in her lifetime; she was a daughter, a sister, a wife, mother and her best role, grandmother.  She taught her children many virtues throughout her lifetime.  Maryann loved all of her children and grandchildren.  She will be greatly missed by her best friend and granddaughter, Aubree.   Maryann has many Hunka children & grandchildren, if we missed you, it was not intentional.

Maryann is survived by her  mother, Evelyn (John) Ross, sisters, Elaine Guy, Sharon Brien, Elaine Sherman, Bernadine White Shield, Brenda White Shield, Audrey Ross, Melody Hill, Janice Roulette, Milo Hill, Vikki Iron Lightening, Theresa Hill, Jeanie Borchert, Mona Chaske, Carol “Duck” White Shield and Sandra Black Crow, brothers, Pete Ross, Curtis Ross, Freeman White Shield, Ken Hill, Rocky BlueShield, Perry Kopp and Micheal Cole, daughters, Lacey (Lovida) Black Bull, Bridget (Matthew) Two Elk, Lynn (Ray) Country, Tashina (Dennis) Larsen, Nicole (Beau) Valandra, Erin (Mikey) McCarty, Arienne Stead, Lindsey Jones, Lacey Bettelyoun, Aricka Thompson Cavanaugh , sons, Tyrone Ross, Mike (Vicki) Burbanks, Travis (Abileen) High Pipe, John Country, Charles Black Crow, Brandon Jones,  Maryann loved her grandchildren & great grandchildren. 

Maryann was preceded by her father, Felix White Shield, husband, Rolland Black Bull, son, Hunter Black Bull, granddaughter, Ashley Country, great granddaughter, Jordan BlueShield, sisters, Noonie White Shield, Doris White Shield, Nita White Shield, Dina Mae White Shield, Tina White Shield and Thelma Amiottee, brothers, Wilson White Shield and Glen Ross.

Wake Service will be Wednesday, October 9th at 5:00PM & Thursday, October 10, 2019, with a Rosary Service on Thursday at 7:00PM, all in St. Michael Recreation Center, St. Michael, ND.

Friends wishing to join the procession from New Rockford to St. Michael may gather on the St. Jerome’s road, prior to 4:30PM

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 11, 2019, at 10:00AM in St. Michael Recreation Center, St. Michael, ND.

Burial will be held at the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, rural St. Michael, ND.
