Fred Freeman, 90, of Bismarck, ND, formerly of Carrington, ND, passed away peacefully February 23, 2023, with his son, Greg by his side at St. Gabriel’s nursing home in Bismarck.

Fredrick Laverne Freeman was born September 17, 1932, to Arthur Sr. and Elsie (Partlow) Freeman near Bordulac, ND. Fred was drafted in the army, served in the Korean War and received an honorable discharge.

Fred married the love of his life, Verna Bittner on September 20, 1958, at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Sykeston, ND.  After their marriage they moved near Eldridge, ND, where Fred worked for a farmer. They eventually rented a farm and moved near Sykeston where he farmed and raised animals. In 1972, they moved to Carrington where Fred was employed for several years with Farmers Union Oil Company and later as a plant manager with a local fertilizer company. Fred was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church

His passion was the outdoors – he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting – and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His grandchildren loved his big heart, his smile, his jokes, and the adventures he took them on. They each had one last smile, one last hug and one last “I love you” they will cherish forever.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Verna of 64 years; his children Tim of Bismarck; Cindy (Randy) Sharbono of Prior Lake, MN; and Greg (Jody) of Bismarck; grandchildren:  Brett (Mariah), Matthew (Rhea) and Riley (Rachel) Sharbono, Shane (Erin) and Tyler Freeman, and Emily (Brandon) Leier; great grandchildren: Connor, Natalie and Elizabeth Sharbono, Poe Leier, Isla Sharbono and Baby Leier due in August; brother, Art Jr. of Carrington; sister, Lois (Jim) Mahutga of Carrington; brothers-in-law: Ray Haugen, Terry Luggar; sister-in-law Delores (Ray) Scherr, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, infant daughter, sisters: Shirley Haugen, Marie (Charles) Mehring, and Cathy Luggar; sisters-in-law: Lois Freeman, Virginia Freeman; brothers-in-law: Daris (Mabel) Bittner, Vernon (Fran) Bittner.

Blessed be his memory.

Fred’s Visitation will be Friday, from 1:00PM-7:00PM with family present from 5:00-7:00PM at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Posted Condolences:

  1. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the Freeman family at this time on the loss of Fred. May the good Lord put his loving arms around you all and comfort you at this time.

  2. Have known Fred for many years, as he was a neighbor of ours, when he farmed near Sykeston. One couldn’t ask for a better neighbor or friend. Fred would do anything for anybody if he could.
Remember him also at Farmers Union in Carrington.
Fred was always cracking jokes and could make anyone laugh and could lighten up any situation with his humor. He would always say Hi, when you would meet him anywhere and always wave if you would see him from a distance.
Great guy and the World is a better place because of Fred, that is for sure.
May our Lord, welcome him into Heaven for all of Eternity and bless him and his whole family!
    Rest in Peace my friend.

  3. Dear Greg and family,
