Martina Kazena

Martina “Sissy” A. Kazena of Crow Hill, rural Fort Totten, ND, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Sanford Hospital, Fargo, ND, surrounded by her loving family.

Martina was born on December 13, 1945 in Fort Totten, ND the daughter of Tony & Grace (Shaw) Walking Eagle.  Martina attended school in Fort Totten, ND and later graduated from Flandreau, SD, where she met the love of her life, Butch.  They met back up again later in 1961 in Los Angeles, CA.  They were united in marriage in 1966 and in 1967 they had their son William Jr.  They made their home in Los Angeles until 1969 and then returned back to ND, where they made their forever home in Crow Hill.  In 1973 they had their only daughter Tanya.

Martina was employed with Spirit Lake Tribe for over 40 years as a teacher/educator, first and foremost, Four Winds School, where she held various positions.  She had love and compassion for all of her students and co-workers.  She enjoyed watching NBA basketball, especially her favorite team the Los Angeles Lakers.  She also enjoyed visiting, joking and just being at home with her family.  Her health started declining after losing her loving husband in 2019.  She will be missed dearly by her daughter, grandkids, her brothers Bruce & King and all her family near and far.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Tanya and RJ Jetty, grandkids Kersten Kazena of Morton, MN, Sheala (Dorvan) Jetty, Ryan Jetty Sr., Breann (Chris) Cook Sr., Rece (Chantel) Jetty and Dwight (Darian) Jackson, brothers Kermit (Carolyn) Walking Eagle, Bruce (Penny) Walking Eagle, Ronnie (Lorna) Walking Eagle, brother-in-law Robert (Kathy) Kazena, sisters Lorna Walking Eagle, Phyllis Luger, Charlene Jetty, Jeannie Walking Eagle, Jeannette LaVallie, sisters-in-law Barbara Walking Eagle, Pat Walking Eagle, Estelle Red Lightening, Colleen (Arlen) Lightfoot, Eunice Joseph, great grandchildren Shanbree and Brayson Jetty, Rylee, Ryan Jr. & Maisyn Jetty, CJ, Brislee, Brayden & Paisley Cook, Tate, Zyleigh & Henzley Jetty and Colter Jackson and special niece/daughter Shelly Luger and many nieces, nephews and relatives.

She is now reunited with her husband William “Butch”, sons William Kazena Jr. and Duran Jensen, her parents Antoine & Grace (Shaw) Walking Eagle, loving grandparents William Four Bear & Jean (Woods) Shaw, father-in-law and mother-in-law Fred & Alice Kazena Sr., brothers Carl Sr., Glen and Curtis Walking Eagle, sister Lisa Walking Eagle, brothers-in-law Harold, Fred Jr., Edgar, Richard, Leonard, Jesse and Loren Kazena Sr., sisters-in-law Violet, Dorothy, Lillian Kazena, God child/niece Carletta Walking Eagle and special nephew/son Neil James Luger and many nieces, nephews and special aunties.

Honorary Bearers: Special thanks to Spirit Lake EMS, Guardian Flight and the staff at Sanford Health of Fargo, ND.

Martina’s Visitation will be Thursday at 5:00PM followed by a Rosary Service at 7:00PM all at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten, ND.

Friends wishing to join the procession from New Rockford to Ft. Totten, may gather on the St. Jerome’s road, Fort Totten, prior to 4:15PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, December 17, 2021 at 2:00PM at Seven Dolor Catholic Church, Fort Totten, ND.

 

Her Burial will be at the Walking Eagle Family Cemetery,

rural Fort Totten, ND.

  1. Sending my deepest sympathy to Tanya and all of Martina’s family. I met Martina in 1973 when I began teaching in Fort Totten. We taught together for many years, and I greatly enjoyed visiting with her and Butch.
