Charlene Liebig

Charlene “Char” Liebig, age 75, of Carrington, ND, passed away peacefully in her sleep the early morning of August 4, 2021.

Charlene Rae Hirsch was born on June 17, 1946 in Bismarck, ND. She was the fourth child and only daughter of George and Freda (Fetzer) Hirsch.

Charlene grew up and attended school in Carrington, ND. She graduated from Carrington High School in May of 1964, and shortly after married Jacob (Jack) Koenig. They had four children together: Dondi, Tony, Kelli, and Jodi. In the early 1980s she met the love of her life, and on November 23, 1983, she married Jerald Liebig in Aberdeen, SD. Char and Jerald lived together in Carrington in the house they renovated until his death in January of 2015.

One of Char’s favorite pastimes was camping. When her children were elementary-age, she would often take them camping at Smokey’s Landing on the Jamestown Reservoir. Later, she and Jerald would also take the teens camping on Spiritwood Lake as well. There were numerous adventures sleeping in and out of tents, sheltering in public restrooms during storms, having enormous fish frys, and nursing horrible sunburns through the years.

Char’s main joy in life was children – her own, and those of others. She began providing childcare from her home when her own children were very young, and continued to do so until several years ago when her physical health would no longer allow it. Many of these children continued to visit Char throughout the years, and would even bring their own children to meet their “Gramma Char”. It was the continuous love of these children that helped keep Char’s spirit so young.

Charlene is survived by her mother Freda Myers, brothers Darvin Hirsch (and Mary Kay), Clayton Hirsch, Gayle Hirsch, Terry Hirsch (and Barbara), Mark Marcussen (and Sandra), Tom Marcussen (and Morgan), and sister-in-law Arlene Hirsch; her children Dondi Koenig, Tony Koenig (and Shannon), Kelli (Koenig) Helton, Jodi Koenig, and step-daughter Heidi Liebig; eight grandchildren, six greatgrandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many other children whom she treated as her own.

Charlene is preceded in death by her husband Jerald Liebig, her father George Hirsch, step-father Russ Marcussen, step-father William Myers, brothers Shearn Hirsch and Bill Larsen, and sisters-in-law Marilyn Hirsch (Gayle) and Bonna Hirsch (Clayton).

Her Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 3:00PM at the Carrington City Park, Carrington.
