Irvin B. Loe, age 87, formerly of McHenry, ND, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the Bethany Retirement Home in Fargo, ND.

Irvin Berne Loe was born February 28, 1937, to Lloyd and Emma (Birkeland) Loe of rural Warwick, ND.  He was one of 4 brothers and 4 sisters in the family. He attended Hillsdale Country School and graduated from Sheyenne High School in 1955. Shortly after he began working for Campbell Construction Company, where he worked for 20 years. It was the kind of place, that “(you) started out picking rock and then would kind of work your way up, running the packer, the water truck and then finally, the blade.” Irvin married Barbara Haley on October 8, 1960, in New Rockford, ND. On October 5, 1961, he was drafted into the US Army, Co. A 864th Engineering Bn, at Fort Wolters, Mineral Wells, Texas. He earned an Expert Badge (Rifle M-1), a Marksmen Badge (Carbine), and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 4, 1963. He then continued working for Campbell Construction. In 1976, he was hired by the Eddy County Road Dept., where he was a Road Grader Operator, helping with road maintenance and road building. He then moved on to be the ECRD Supervisor. He and Barb were also members of the New Rockford Eagles, where they also bartended. After 42 years, he retired and continued to be busy taking care of the farmstead east of New Rockford. If you would call him, he was often out on the zero-turn mower, or in his workshop, but always needed to be busy.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Loe of McHenry, ND; daughter, Brenda (Jeff) Unterseher of Bowdon ND; son, Tim (Tanya) of Thief River Falls, MN; 3 grandchildren, Wendy (Kevin) Nordsven, Brandy Unterseher, and Jenna (Billy) Davis; two great-grandchildren, Cooper and Olivia; 3 sisters-in-law, Faye, Jeneen, and Jan Loe; and many nieces & nephews.

Irvin was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Emil, David, and Mike; and 4 sisters, Laurel Kokko, Betty Anderson, Marilyn Stenberg, and Ellen Burthold.

Irvin’s Visitation will be on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from Noon-1:00PM followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00PM all at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

His Burial will be at the Grace City Cemetery.

  2. Uncle Irvin was a man I looked up too, not only because he was tall, but because of his kind gentle soul. A man of few words. I loved randomly running into him out and about, in the wild, at Walmart or the grocery store, and quickly chatting in the isle. He brought a smile and joy to my heart just by being present. The last of the Loe siblings, Irvin will be missed greatly.
Love and Big Loe bear hugs to aunt Barb and family.
