  2. Our thoughts and prayers are with Pattie and her family. We all will miss Allen going forward. I had the honor of working for him at the Independent for years. I will miss his stories. This past summer we would purposely have coffee breaks at HiWay Drive In hoping we’d see him there for a good visit.

  6. Just heard this terrible news. I worked for Allen for many years and always enjoyed running into him and Pattie at various places. He didn’t get much of a retirement, but maybe part of the problem was he loved the work and the contact with the public. Allen, RIP, and hope you’re getting that good story on your new journey!! To your family, we’re very sorry for your loss.

  11. Sending prayers and hugs to Pattie and all members of the Allen Stock family. I worked for Allen at the Carrington newspaper in the 1980s and he taught me much about writing for a local newspaper. Allen loved serving Carrington and the surrounding towns, he worked hard to provide important information to local community members. I’ll never forget how he would get a sparkle in his eye when he heard about a good news story. He is probably starting up a newspaper in heaven now.

  14. I went to school with Allen in Fessenden. We drew names for the Valentine box in first grade. It was a large red heart-shaped box. Allen sat in front of me and turned around and said, “You lucky duck!”
I also was bass drummer in the band so sat with him again. He was always frustrated I never wanted to learn snare drums. He was the best drummer that came out of Wells County, I am sure, or maybe the state of North Dakota. Then, I worked with him at the Wells County Free Press for two years during high school. One of the good guys.

  18. My condolences to Pattie and the rest of the Stock family. I enjoyed many conversations with Allen in Kiwanis and other community and school functions. As a fellow “car guy” there was always something to talk about our classic cars. One day going to a Kiwanis meeting, we looked at the recently vacated Nicholson-Carr Building and I said “That office would be a good place for all of us to get together and talk about our cars.” Allen asked “Is there enough room for all of us to work on our cars?” I said “Allen, we never work on our cars, we just talk about working on them!” He said “You’re right. That’s what we do. There should be enough room for that!” Too bad we never had that clubhouse, but I’m glad he got to fix his up and enjoy it for a few years. Rest in peace where your tires always burn out but your clutch never does.

  20. I attended high school in Fessenden only two years, but being in a small school, you knew everyone. Allen was such a fun guy to be around. He sang in the Mixed Chorus of which I was a member. He had a great voice. We had a great time rehearsing for the senior play, “The Great Big Doorstep”. Lots of good times playing cards at some homes as I recall. He was a fun loving person.

  21. I was saddened to hear of Mr. Stock’s passing, what a wonderful man!! I have so many great memories of Mr. Stock, my best friend’s dad, countless hours I spent with the Stocks, the trips with their family and the meals we shared around their table, my first boss (stuffing the newspaper ads) and the greatest cheerleader in the stands for every sport or concert or play we all participated in. Hugs to all of you! He will be greatly missed, but his legacy lives on in the lives of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

  31. I was saddened to hear about Allen. I worked for him and Patty a little over 10 years. I have a few wonderful memories, he hosted the best employee Christmas party, the room was decorated beautifully, the food was the best, the games and prizes were awesome and I received my first ever Christmas bonus from them and it meant so much. Another great memory was our employee camping trip to Park Rapids, he once again outdid himself for each of us and we always had a wonderful time. He taught me so much about advertising and the newspaper. One funny story is he saved everything, I threw something away one day and three weeks later he was looking for it 😊.Rest easy Boss you will be missed by so many people. Thanks for caring.

I am so sorry to hear of Allen’s passing. I worked for Allen in the early 1980’s. Allen was a wonderful boss and community leader. I loved my time working at the Independent. Allen created a family atmosphere and he cared greatly about the community and quality of the newspaper. I have so many fond memories. Allen must have touched so many lives over the years. I am grateful he hired me as a young reporter. He made a difference in my life.

  36. So sorry to hear of Allen’s passing. He was one of a kind. My family spent a number of years in Carrington. There was not a better supporter of the Community than Al. Being in the Newspaper Business after leaving Carrington I can attest to what a balancing act Allen did by being an advocate for the entire area and still reporting the news. The community and a wide area will miss one of the best. Thanks Allen for all you did.
