Vikki Ann Sondag, age 72, of Carrington, North Dakota, died peacefully on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. She was surrounded by her family and friends at the time of her passing.

Vikki was born in Carrington on March 19, 1951 to James and Jean Smith. She was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and attended elementary and high school in Carrington as well, graduating in 1969. She married Gary Sondag on August 21, 1971, in Carrington, where they made a home and raised their family. Vikki attended the North Dakota State School of Science, earning an LPN certification. She later returned to school to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduating from Jamestown College. Vikki served as an RN for many years in Carrington and Jamestown, having a lasting impact on her patients, co-workers, and communities.

In addition to her profession, Vikki found happiness in cooking and crafting. She was an excellent cook, using recipes as suggestions rather than instructions, relying on her intuition as a guide. Her kitchen creations were a testament to her creativity, with her chocolate cake being a family favorite. Her delicious, homemade dishes brought warmth to every occasion. Vikki also enjoyed crocheting, crafting beautiful afghans that she shared with her loved ones. Her crochet work will be cherished as an enduring symbol of her love.

Vikki is survived by her husband, Gary; four children, Eric (Cindy) Sondag and their children, Elle, Owen, and Ben; Tana (Cory) McKibben, and their children, Nela and Kaedyn; Beth (Josh) Schmieg, and their children, Nevaeh, Traeh, and Elijaeh; Kara (Clint) Schaeffer, and their children, Ava, Rogen, and Lenny; her sisters, Sheri and Eileen; and her brothers, Bob, Tom, and Doug.

Vikki was preceded in death by her father, James Smith; her mother, Jean Smith; and her brother, Dan Smith.

Vikki’s Visitation will be on Thursday from 1:00 – 7:00PM with a Rosary Service at 6:45PM followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00PM all at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, ND.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 8, 2023 at 10:30AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington, ND.

Her Burial will be at the Carrington Cemetery.

  3. I am so sorry to hear of Vikki’s passing. We worked together at the NDSH. She not only was a wonderful co-worker but a Great friend. Some of my best recipes came from her. My mom had the pizza palace and Vikki was the only person I knew that liked just onion pizza. My thoughts and Prayers go to her family.

  14. I had the great privilege of having Vikki as my supervisor at the state hospital. She was always fair, kind, and ready to listen. Vikki would always walk on the ward with a smile and even though busy would take a few minutes to say hi and visit with the staff and patients. She will be greatly missed by many.
